A cable crossover machine (or cable cross machine) is the most versatile piece of gym equipment you can own. This very efficient machine will work virtually every muscle in your body in multiple ways, meaning that weight training takes less time than working each muscle individually. This also means that workouts themselves are more efficient, as there is no need to move from one piece of equipment to the next, waiting your turn, and then having to adjust each new piece of equipment that you use. Instead, the pulleys and weight stacks on the cable cross machine are quick and easy to adjust, with no down time waiting for other people to finish using the machine.
Because most cable crossover machines allow you to work one side of your body at a time, you get a better work out because your stronger side can't cheat and compensate for your weaker the side, which is what happens with fitness machines that work both sides at a time. By isolating leg or one arm at a time, you can work that particular muscle to exhaustion without allowing its opposite side to step in and help out.
Because a cable crossover machine doesn't lock your body into place like most gym machines, you have to work harder to maintain your form, posture and balance. All of this extra work gives your muscle fibers a harder workout, particularly your abdominal and other core muscles.
But a lot of gym members shy away from the cable cross machine, thinking that it looks too intimidating. The truth is, there are only three adjustments you need to make for each exercise: the weight stack, the handle or attachment, and the handle height. The weight stack might be a little more challenging than the gym machines you are used to at the gym, so start with a bit less weight than you are used to and work up to a more challenging weight. You will probably have a choice of handles or attachments, so pick from an assortment of bars, handles, cuffs, and ropes. There is no limit to the type of attachment you can use, and no rules either. Experiement with a few different handles and attachments, and then just choose the attachment you feel most comfortable with. Using different handles will help mix up your workouts and keep you interested, so if things are getting a little bit boring at the gym, just choose a rope instead of the handles you usually use. After you attach the bar or the handle, you need to adjust the height of the cable cross machine to your comfort level. If you are doing an exercise that requires you to lift weight up, like a bicep curl, you will want the handle to be low. Set it highfor lat pull downs or tricep extensions, and keep it at chest level for chest fly or shoulder work. You really can't go wrong, if the level feels uncomfortable, just change it. Like any other piece of exercise equipment, the cable crossover machine takes some practice. But once you get the hang of it, you will love the smooth and uninterrupted workouts that feel a lot like circuit training. Chances are, the cable cross machine is about to become your favorite piece of exercise equipment, and you'll soon want to take one home for your own home gym!
